Sono passati quattro anni dalla fine di City of Heavenly Fire, quattro anni dalla morte di Jonathan Christopher Morgenstern, quattro anni passati adagiando su di una calma che i Nephilim non vedevano ormai da tempo. Ma come tutte le cose, anche questa momentanea pace non è destinata a perdurare. Una strega, infatti, sta progettando vendetta, vendetta contro tutti i Figli dell'Angelo, talmente compiacenti al verbo del Cielo da non esitare un solo istante prima di pugnalare alle spalle persino un amico, tutto pur di seguire il loro stretto codice di onore. La Figlia di Lilith urla vendetta, ferita e accecata dall'odio, infatti, sta ideando un piano che vedrà la sua conclusione solo e unicamente con la sconfitta dei Nephilim. Alleatasi con la Signora dei Demoni, Lamia, creatura assetata di sangue, sta reclutando adepti per la sua crociata di distruzione. Tutto ebbe inizio a causa del tradimento di John Carstairs e proprio da lì ella intende riaprire le danze.

One thousand years ago, the precise date unknown, the earth was being invaded by hordes of demons. A man, Jonathan Shadowhunter, had a warlock summon the angel Raziel. He begged Raziel to help save humanity so the angel mixed his blood with that of Jonathan Shadowhunter, in the Mortal Cup, and gave it to men to drink. Those men became known as the Shadowhunters, as did their children, and their children's children. {x}
